# Swell Practice

> How the invite-only Swell Practice tool handles audio, transcripts, sign-in and storage. Everything on this page applies to the practice tool only, not to the Swell Mac app.

<Info>
**Everything on this page applies only to the Swell Practice tool.** Swell Practice is a separate, invite-only browser tool for rehearsing sales discovery calls with an AI-played customer. It does not change how the Swell Mac app, its coaching relay at `coach.tryswell.co`, or its data are handled; for those, see the [Security Overview](/).
</Info>

## What Swell Practice is (practice tool only)

Swell Practice runs at `practice.tryswell.co`. A signed-in, invited user holds a mock discovery call of up to 30 minutes with an AI "prospect" in the browser, while Swell's real-time coaching shows the same short flash tips the Mac app does. The conversation is a rehearsal with a fictional customer, not a real sales call, and no other people take part in it.

* **Invite-only (practice tool only):** access requires a per-user feature flag (`practice-access`) that Swell turns on by hand in WorkOS. Both the practice site and the practice coaching relay check it.
* **Separate deployments (practice tool only):** the practice tool has its own website, its own coaching relay and its own database. None of them is shared with the Swell Mac app's production or staging systems, and practice data never mixes with Mac app data.
* **Status (practice tool only):** a limited experiment for a small number of invited users. It is not offered to customers.

## What happens to audio (practice tool only)

During a practice call, the browser handles two audio streams, with your permission to use the microphone:

1. **Your microphone** goes to OpenAI (for the AI prospect to hear you) and to Swell's practice coaching relay (for coaching).
2. **The AI prospect's voice** comes from OpenAI and plays through your headphones. The browser also sends the part that actually played to Swell's practice coaching relay, so coaching hears both sides of the call.

The practice coaching relay then transcribes and coaches exactly like the Mac app's relay: Deepgram Nova-3 for speech-to-text, and Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5 Fast through Vercel AI Gateway for coaching (text only, never audio). See [Model training and subprocessors](/#model-training-and-subprocessors) for those providers.

**Raw audio is not recorded or stored by Swell (practice tool included).**

## OpenAI (practice tool only)

OpenAI is a subprocessor **for the practice tool only**. The Swell Mac app does not send anything to OpenAI.

| Item | Detail (practice tool only) |
| - | - |
| Purpose | Plays the AI prospect through the OpenAI Realtime API (a speech-to-speech model) |
| Data processed | Your microphone audio during the practice call, and the fictional scenario instructions that define the prospect |
| Connection | Your browser connects to OpenAI directly for the call's audio (WebRTC). Swell's practice server sets the call up with Swell's OpenAI key; the key never reaches the browser |
| Model training | Not used to train OpenAI models; OpenAI API data is not used for training by default ([OpenAI: your data](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/your-data)) |
| Retention at OpenAI | OpenAI keeps no application state for Realtime calls. Its standard abuse-monitoring logs are kept for up to 30 days. Swell has not enabled OpenAI Zero Data Retention for the practice tool |
| Location | United States |
| Call end | Swell's server hangs up the OpenAI call when the practice call ends, and practice calls end automatically after 30 minutes |

## Sign-in (practice tool only)

You sign in to Swell Practice with Google through WorkOS AuthKit in the browser, the same identity provider as the Mac app. The difference, **for the practice tool only**, is how the session is kept: the practice site stores your session in an encrypted, HttpOnly, Secure, host-only cookie that page scripts cannot read, instead of the macOS Keychain. The page holds the short-lived access token it uses for the practice coaching relay in memory only. A strict Content Security Policy limits the page to Swell's own scripts.

## Storage and retention (practice tool only)

| Data | Retention (practice tool only) |
| - | - |
| Raw audio | Not recorded or stored by Swell |
| Practice transcripts, flash tips, session details and, when enabled, coaching debug traces | **Kept until deleted by hand.** Practice calls are synthetic rehearsals kept to improve the product, so the Mac app's automatic 24-hour purge does not run on the practice database. Ask [hello@tryswell.co](mailto:hello@tryswell.co) to delete your practice data at any time |
| Account information | As for the Mac app: until deletion is requested |

Practice data lives in a practice-only Convex database, separate from the Mac app's production database. Session details record which AI prospect version and OpenAI call were used, never your audio.

## Network (practice tool only)

Swell Practice runs in a desktop browser (Chrome) and needs, **for the practice tool only**:

| Destination | Protocol | Purpose (practice tool only) |
| - | - | - |
| `practice.tryswell.co` | HTTPS | The practice site and its server |
| `radiant-prosperity-practice.up.railway.app` | WSS | The practice coaching relay |
| `*.workos.com` | HTTPS | Google sign-in |
| OpenAI Realtime media | WebRTC (UDP, or TCP fallback) | The AI prospect's audio |

None of these are needed by the Swell Mac app. See [IT Network Requirements](/network) for the Mac app.
